Stuck for ideas on what to give your loved ones this Christmas?

Giving gifts is a wonderful way to show someone we care. But sometimes we have to buy for someone we don't know that well and have no idea what they'd like. And now and then we run out of ideas even for our nearest and dearest – after all, they're the people we buy for most often (birthdays, holidays…), so it's no surprise if nothing clever springs to mind by the end of the year.

Where does the custom of giving gifts come from?

In Slovenia, the most traditional and oldest custom is giving gifts on 6 December, the feast of Saint Nicholas, a Christian bishop and saint. He is still known for his generosity: he is said to have come from a wealthy family and given all his riches to the poor. Increasingly, though, Saint Nicholas is being replaced as the gift-bringer by Santa Claus, whose celebration comes from America, and in some places by Grandfather Frost, who comes from Russia.

Gift-giving – an act of love or mindless spending?

Gifts are one way of showing someone how much they mean to us. At the same time, the December rush is increasingly about consumerism and materialism. Instead of a peaceful Advent with family, many people spend the holidays rushing from shop to shop.

So what should you give?

Personal gifts are the loveliest, because they show we listen and know the person's wishes, hobbies and interests. Experiences make wonderful non-material gifts too. And products from small local businesses bring a smile not only to the people receiving them, but to us makers as well. :)
