Calendula ointment - recipe

Ognjičevo mazilo – recept

Plants that may be growing right in your garden have amazing healing properties. Even as a little girl, I helped my grandfather make calendula ointment, which nourishes the skin and is really versatile.

The ointment comes in handy in autumn and winter, when our skin is drier and more irritated. Olive oil and beeswax create a protective layer on the skin that retains moisture in the skin. It can be used for the skin on the hands and elsewhere on the body where we have dry skin. In addition, it also comes in handy in the warmer months to soothe the skin after insect bites.

Ingredients for 100 ml of ointment:

  • half a teaspoon of honey,
  • 100 g of olive oil,
  • 20 g of beeswax,
  • a spoonful of dried lavender flowers,
  • half a spoonful of dry chamomile flowers,
  • half a spoonful of dry marigold flowers

Recipe:

Heat the olive oil together with the beeswax over steam and stir until the wax is completely melted. Then add dried flowers of calendula, lavender and chamomile and cook on low heat for about half an hour. Then add half a teaspoon of honey and mix well. Strain the prepared mixture through a thick strainer or cheesecloth and pour into a clean container and wait for it to cool and harden.

If you want to extract as many active ingredients as possible from the flowers, you can soak dried lavender, chamomile and calendula flowers in olive oil for 4 to 6 weeks in a closed glass container and in a bright place, but not in direct light. Then strain everything through a strainer. Heat the resulting oil extract together with beeswax over steam until the wax melts. Then pour the mixture into containers and wait for it to cool. The ointment is then ready for use.

Some positive properties of the ingredients:

  • Honey accelerates the healing of wounds, as it has an anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effect.
  • Beeswax gives the skin elasticity and creates a protective layer on it, preventing it from drying out, but does not clog the pores.
  • Olive oil is full of powerful antioxidants, with which it hunts free radicals that are released by the action of UV light, thus inhibiting damage and aging of the skin.
  • Lavender has a calming effect, and is also used for sunburns, as it nourishes and soothes irritated skin.
  • Calendula and chamomile reduce inflammation, as they have an antimicrobial effect, which is why they are also often used to treat skin injuries.

I wish you much joy in creating the ointment! ~ Rebecca
